Why Performers Quit Musical Theatre (And How to Stay In)
If you’ve ever felt stuck, behind, or completely burned out in your musical theatre career, you’re not alone. And the truth? It’s probably not because you aren’t talented or connected enough.
After decades in this industry as both a performer and coach, I’ve seen the same two patterns show up again and again—the real reasons performers slowly give up on the career they once loved.
And once you know what they are, you can shift them.

1️⃣ Bitterness: The Silent Career Killer
Bitterness often sneaks in quietly: comparison on social media, resentment over roles you didn’t book, that constant feeling of being overlooked.
You start to lose the joy. You bring tension into the room. You audition from a place of fear instead of alignment.
I’ve been there, too—and it nearly made me walk away.
But here’s the shift:
Bitterness doesn’t come from the industry.
It comes from what we choose to carry with us.
Let it go, and you create space for the kind of performer—and person—you really want to be.
2️⃣ Lack of Growth: When You Stop Evolving, You Get Stuck
So many performers stop growing.
They stop learning new songs.
They stop updating their reels.
They avoid learning digital tools, trying new submission platforms, or stepping into other creative opportunities.
Here’s the truth:
The industry is evolving. You can either resist it—or grow with it.
The performers who stay in the game are the ones who keep learning.
And that learning doesn’t have to be big. Sometimes it’s one new platform. One mindset shift. One new creative outlet.
I’ve stayed in this career for over two decades because I never stopped growing—as an artist, as a business owner, and as a person. You can do the same.
